President’s Letter – July 12, 2011: Vacation
The toy business never slows down, and that is true of most
businesses these days. The computer and communications tools that
promised years ago that they would make our lives easier and more
convenient, instead simply increased the pace. Now, if someone
does not respond to our email within 24 hours, we feel snubbed.
And for the younger folks in our population, email itself is too
slow…they only text and twitter.
Some of the toy industry executives on the TIA Board have begun to
take time off for vacations this summer….or at least that is what
I am told by their assistants. Nevertheless, when I send an email
off to the Board these days, those same execs are responding within 24
hours. Same has been true over that last two weeks among our
senior staff on vacation. Some vacation!
I hope to get a week off in mid-August with my wife, Fran, but I
suspect I too will be monitoring emails. To a large extent, we
respond to emails while on vacation because we love our work, and by
responding to a few messages now, there will be fewer to handle when we
But time away and true disconnection from work are healthy and
restorative. So I hope all of you will get that kind of time this
summer. And I promise I will not be offended if you do not answer
my emails within 24 hours.
