CARU’s 2nd Annual West Coast Summit to be Held April 3

March 20, 2012 | The Children’s Advertising and Review Unit (CARU) will host its 2nd Annual Children’s Advertising and Online Privacy Summit at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, CA, on April 3rd, 2012 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The one-day event will examine domestic and global challenges to self-regulation in the areas of virtual worlds and social networking, mobile marketing, and food and beverage advertising.  In addition, the conference will include in-depth discussions on the proposed changes to the FTC’s Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, while providing attendees with practical information to enhance their ability to navigate the children’s advertising industry’s self-regulatory forum, such as CARU’s Self-Regulatory Program for Children’s Advertising.

Specific to the toy industry, a presentation called From Disclosures to Movement Depiction: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Toy Advertising will be presented by Jeanette Neumann, Manager, Standards & Practices, Mattel; Sheila Millar, Partner, Keller & Heckman LLP; and Cynthia Nishimoto, Senior VP, Business & Legal Affairs, Bandai. The discussion will focus on the many considerations that come into “play” when advertising to children – from the “when, where and what” types of disclosures are necessary, to safety rules and the depiction of movement in ads.

Other session topics presented throughout the day will include: CARU Year in Review - Hot Button Issues to Consider When Planning an Ad Campaign; The Wild Side of Promotions Across Multi-Media Platforms; Like This, Tweet That – Social Media & Advertising for Children Done Right; Proposed Changes to COPPA – Where Are We Now?; Behavioral Advertising Update; Online Interest-Based Advertising Accountability; and Self-Regulation and Responsible Food Marketing to Children.

CARU is the children's arm of the advertising industry's self-regulation program and evaluates child-directed advertising and promotional material in all media to advance truthfulness, accuracy and consistency with its Self-Regulatory Guidelines for Children's Advertising and relevant laws.

A year-round supporter of CARU, Toy Industry Association (TIA) staff will be present at the event.  For more information and to register, please visit the CARU event website.
