CARU’s 2nd Annual West Coast Summit to be Held April

and Review Unit (CARU) will host its 2nd Annual Children’s Advertising and Online
Privacy Summit at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, CA, on
April 3rd, 2012 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The one-day event will examine domestic and global challenges to
self-regulation in the areas of virtual worlds and social networking,
mobile marketing, and food and beverage advertising. In addition,
the conference will include in-depth discussions on the proposed changes
to the FTC’s Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, while
providing attendees with practical information to enhance their ability
to navigate the children’s advertising industry’s
self-regulatory forum, such as CARU’s Self-Regulatory Program for
Children’s Advertising.
Specific to the toy industry, a presentation called From
Disclosures to Movement Depiction: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know
about Toy Advertising will be presented by Jeanette Neumann,
Manager, Standards & Practices, Mattel; Sheila Millar, Partner,
Keller & Heckman LLP; and Cynthia Nishimoto, Senior VP, Business
& Legal Affairs, Bandai. The discussion will focus on the many
considerations that come into “play” when advertising to
children – from the “when, where and what” types of
disclosures are necessary, to safety rules and the depiction of movement
in ads.
Other session topics presented throughout the day will include:
CARU Year in Review - Hot Button Issues to Consider When Planning an
Ad Campaign; The Wild Side of Promotions Across Multi-Media
Platforms; Like This, Tweet That – Social Media &
Advertising for Children Done Right; Proposed Changes to COPPA
– Where Are We Now?; Behavioral Advertising
Update; Online Interest-Based Advertising Accountability;
and Self-Regulation and Responsible Food Marketing to
Children.
CARU is the children's arm of the advertising
industry's self-regulation program and evaluates child-directed
advertising and promotional material in all media to advance
truthfulness, accuracy and consistency with its Self-Regulatory
Guidelines for Children's Advertising and relevant laws.
