Registration Opens for TIA Webinar on the FTC and Environmental Marketing

As a part of its ongoing education and training services program, TIA will host a one-hour webinar from 1:30 pm –  2:30 pm EDT on Wednesday, April 21, to provide toy industry stakeholders with updates on the “Do’s and Don’ts” of environmental marketing:

The FTC and Environmental Marketing Claims: An Overview for the Toy Industry
Registration:  Free for TIA members and $49 for non-members.

Promotion of the “green” attributes of products and services is a rapidly growing component of environmental marketing practices that are growing across a diverse array of industry sectors. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) plays an important role in helping to ensure that these environmental advertisements are truthful, substantiated, and not confusing to consumers.

To commemorate Earth Day 2010, TIA has invited Laura Koss, a senior attorney in the FTC’s division of enforcement, to provide an overview of the Commission’s role in helping marketers avoid making unfair or deceptive environmental claims and introduce the general principles of FTC’s advertising law.  A primary focus of the session will be an introduction to the FTC’s Guides for the Use of Environmental Marketing Claims, also known as the Green Guides.

The session will include a discussion of:

  • General Principles of Advertising Law:  Claims and Substantiation
  • Green Guides:  Application, Purpose, Principles, and Review Process
  • Types of Marketing Claims
  • Emerging Environmental Advertising Issues

A summary of several case studies will help raise awareness of “green marketing” claims and illustrate various regulatory and compliance requirements. A question and answer session will also help participants gain a better understanding of the appropriate approach to green marketing.

Compliance officers, public relations, marketing, and sales professionals at toy, youth and entertainment companies who need to know how to responsibly (and legally) communicate environmental claims relating to toy products, packages or services are encouraged to attend.

Registration for this webinar is free for TIA members and $49 for non-members. As with other TIA webinars, the presentation will also be available post-event for those who are unable to participate live.
