Sandbox Summit Conference Announces Keynote Speakers and Panelists
for 2010
Organizers of the May 2010 Sandbox Summit conference iPlay, YouPlay,
WiiPlay: How Play is Changing Media & Media is Changing
Play have recently confirmed several new sessions and speakers
on the program line-up. The two day conference, which kicks off on
May 18th at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge,
MA, is sponsored in part by the Toy Industry Association.
This year’s event brings together leading innovators in
children’s media, books, toys, virtual worlds, and education for
an exploration of the impact that emerging media and technology
platforms have on kids’ play – and to share their
predictions on how the new playrooms will impact 21st century
literacy.
“We are looking at how children and technology are reshaping
the play environment,” said Wendy Smolen, co-founder, Sandbox
Summit. “From books to toys to screens of all sizes,
technology is making an impact on how kids play and what they’re
learning from their play.”
Henry Jenkins, provost’s professor of communication, journalism
and cinematic arts at the University of Southern California, will
deliver a keynote entitled Toying with Transmedia: The Future of
Entertainment Is Child's Play. The session will explore the new
buzz in Hollywood where media moguls are recognizing the larger
implications of a world where every story, image and sound plays out
across multiple media channels.
Laura Seargeant Richardson, principial designer of frog design Inc.
will host The Medium Doesn’t Matter, a second keynote
session which will explore play as the preparation for a future that
constantly redefines reality. Conference participants will see how
play across platforms is becoming an important training ground for kids
to intuit greater complexity, move seamlessly through man-made and
natural constructs, and introduce news ways of seeing.
“Eventually, the medium won’t matter,” says
Seargeant Richardson, “it will simply be one more toy in the toy
chest, waiting for interpretation, manipulation and
imagination.”
Additional sessions and moderators announced include:
- A New Chapter for Books: Innovative Approaches to the Oldest
Form of Media
Moderated by Alexandra Kennedy, Executive Director, The Eric Carle
Museum of Picture Art
- Design Breakthroughs: When Toys Meet Technology – and it
Works
Moderated by Scot Osterweil, Creative Director, MIT Education
Arcade
