Plastic, Classic and Fantastic
by Reyne Rice, TIA Trend Specialist
Barbie celebrated her 50th birthday in pink carpet style at
her own “Real” Malibu Dream House. At this over-the-top,
unapologetically pink mansion, an elite crowd gathered to bid homage to
this chic, five-decade young fashionista. Heidi Klum and glam jewelry
artist Tarina Tarantino were just two of the current day fashion icons
to grace the pink carpet. Barbie has drawn attention as a global fashion
icon since her voluptuous figure was first revealed at Toy Fair on March
9, 1959 in New York City, as the “Teenage Fashion
Guests were asked to channel their inner Barbie for suggested attire,
so I donned the limited-edition hand-painted Swarovski crystal jean
jacket created for her 30th anniversary, in honor of her very first
Nostalgic Barbie campaign, featuring the classic, sassy ponytail Barbie.
Accessorized with white sunglasses, and stylish Barbie Stila cosmetics,
I was ready to channel my inner diva.
Once inside the entrance of the Barbie house, styled and decorated by
“Happy Chic” interior designer Jonathan Adler, we
weren’t disappointed. Her stylish décor was, well, pink, with
black and white accents, and her kitschy living room chandelier was
crafted as a “chandehair” from hundreds of yards of
Barbie’s hair, strategically placed in front of her portrait
created by Andy Warhol.
Barbie’s iconic silhouette decorated her subtle, but tasteful
signature line, and her shoe closet contained 42 pairs of identical
bubble-gum pink patent leather Christian Louboutin stiletto heels. We
reminisced about the five decades of Barbie fashion photos which were
mounted gallery style. Barbie has had 108 inspirational careers
and annually employs over 50 stylists dedicated to creating her hair,
make-up, couture and casual fashions. Barbie revealed her new look for
2009. Yes, there were some slight sculpting improvements to her face
(plastic surgery and great make-up artists at work), but her figure is
still sleek and sexy, especially for a woman her age.
On her outdoor pool patio, Barbie guests enjoyed the music of DJ AM.
Colin Cowie, the event-planner-to-the-stars, pulled out all the stops to
make the event a night to remember. Party details included: 1,800 pairs
of Barbie® sized sunglasses, 3,500 pairs of
Barbie® shoes and 3,500 Barbie® handbags used to
fill custom designed Lucite tables. Also, 3,000 pink roses for
centerpieces, 146 pounds of pink candy lined the dessert table and 1,030
pounds of ice were used to create an ice sculpture of a birthday cake!
My favorite dessert was the white chocolate encrusted marshmallows.
After Malibu, the Barbie® Dream House® travels to The
Palms in Las Vegas, where The Palms' Hot Pink Suite will be transformed
into the BarbieTM Suite, opening in May
2009. The suite will include several of the Malibu Dream House®'s
key decor pieces and Jonathan Adler's signature style, allowing girls of
all ages to experience the fantasy and fun of Barbie®'s Dream
A full year of Golden Anniversary celebrations are also being staged
globally. From a Valentine’s Day New York Fashion Week runway
show to the Barbie Shanghai Store Grand opening and the upcoming Colette
Boutique launch in Paris, Barbie has already had quite the party girl.
