Toy Trends Teaser: Zombies, Monsters & More

The following article is the third in a series of pre-Toy Fair “teasers” offering a sneak peek at the Toy Industry Association’s (TIA) predictions for the year’s hottest toy trends.

January 30, 2014 | Zombies, monsters and ghouls are about to take over the toy aisle thanks to an inundation of “frightfully fun” playthings for kids of all ages.

“Vampires were hot, but now zombies and monsters are all the rage!” said Adrienne Appell, TIA trend expert. “Ghoulish action figures and dolls with relatable characters and back-stories are less frightening for younger kids, while older boys and girls will get a kick out of ‘gross out’ toys.”

This trend includes gothic-style fashion dolls and accessories, detailed figures for older collectors, and trivia games for fans of popular movies and TV shows, like the Walking Dead.

“Toys that transport children to mysterious worlds foster young imaginations while also teaching kids that it’s OK to be different and stand out from the crowd,” added Appell.

TIA will unveil the top trends of 2014 at its annual “Toy Trends Tea” seminar, taking place on Monday, February 17 at 4 p.m. in Room 1E19 at the Javits Center. All Toy Fair attendees are invited to attend this informative session; advance registration is not required.
